Time getting old

“TIGOL – Time Getting Old – is a project financed by the Erasmus+ programme. It is aimed at creating a solid, shared and transferable model to combat the social exclusion and discrimination of young people – natives and migrants – which has a positive impact on reducing the phenomenon of school dropout. The main result is to validate a prevention model centered on strategies for using one’s time in everyday life for the benefit of young people aged between 14 and 18 with a focus on temporality, existence, planning, as the possibility of making anticipatory and non-procrastinating decisions”.

What we do

OUR THEMES

TIME

TIME
Time is not – just – an objective measurable entity. It is linked to human existence and as such is Temporality. It is not – only – a succession of moments but – also – a unitary structure that includes the past – what we have been – the present – our experience of current existence – and the future – the possibilities to come. The human being projects himself into the future through his own choices, determining the meaning of his (possible) being.

SCARCITY

SCARCITY
When people feel they have little time available – the perception of time scarcity – they tend to experience anxiety and stress. This reduces their ability to make rational decisions resulting in a greater focus on immediate tasks at the expense of long-term goals. Attention is limited to emergencies only – tunnel effect – reducing planning capabilities. A greater awareness of the “finitude of time” allows you to make more rewarding and meaningful choices.

PRESSURE

PRESSURE
A marked perception of lack of time generates strong psychological pressure that negatively influences both subjective well-being and decision-making. Under the pressure of lack of time, decisions are made impulsively or based on simplified heuristics with an increase in the level of stress and difficulty in solving more complex problems by opting for quick but less effective solutions.

FUTURE

FUTURE
TIGOL understands the Future as the ability and anticipatory selection of one’s current possibilities: it is not just a horizon waiting to be realized but the result of decisions that are made in the present, orienting our (possible) being. This implies the ability to plan, through targeted choices, imagining and building possible future scenarios and the possibilities of transforming them into reality.

PUBLICATIONS

Finally we can say it…

Our research has been officially published within the Erasmus project “TIGOL – Time that ages” on combating school dropout in collaboration with the University of Genoa and all the Italian and French partners who participated in the project.

The title of our article is: “The weight of time: perception of scarcity of time and risk of dropout among adolescents” and you can find it in the volume published by the Fondazione per la Scuola (published by Il Mulino) “The school that reads itself”.

The book brings together a very interesting multidisciplinary overview of school dropout to better understand this complex phenomenon and identify transformative, educational ideas to combat school dropout.
